This post offers the exciting and challenging opportunity to join the friendly and dynamic NHS Highland biochemistry team (1 Consultant Medical Biochemist and 1 Consultant Clinical Scientist) based in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. You will help provide the biochemistry service for the Highlands of Scotland (an area bigger than the size of Belgium) and the post will involve travel once a month to our rural laboratory sites.
NHS Highland serves a population of some 320,000 residents covering an area comprising 40% of the Scottish landmass and sees a proportion of its patients from the influx of tourists to the Highlands, which at certain times of the year can double or even triple the local population. Raigmore Hospital, Inverness is a large prestigious general and teaching hospital, providing on-site a wide range of services in most major specialities. The hospital is one of the five Cancer Centres in Scotland. Raigmore Hospital is an integral part of Aberdeen University Medical School and has close links with Highlands and Islands Health Research Institute.
The NHS Highland Blood Sciences Department is accredited as a network across Raigmore, Belford and Caithness General Hospitals to UKAS ISO15189:2012 standards and offers an extensive range of services at Raigmore, with the laboratories at the rural hospitals offering a smaller repertoire multi-disciplinary service. There are also some 25 community hospitals offering a range of different services, including some acute care, and full support is given to primary care.
Major changes you can be part of include new equipment, order comms, addition of Lorn&Islands laboratory to the network and expansion of electronic referral test reporting (NPEX) and POCT, with opportunities to lead projects around service delivery, re-design, demand optimisation and verification. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an area of specialist interest for example development of dynamic function testing and reporting in conjunction with the Endocrine MDT.

Essential qualifications are HCPC registration as a clinical scientist and FRCPath in Clinical Biochemistry. A minimum of five years experience would be preferred.
