Job Advert

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist post with a special interest in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Intensive Care based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Located in the North East of Scotland, Aberdeen is an affluent, friendly and vibrant city, combining all the amenities of a large city with quick, easy access to its beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline. Aberdeen has a large Anaesthetic department which covers a comprehensive range of clinical services and offers many opportunities to develop research and teaching interests in collaboration with the local universities.

The post is being advertised at an exciting time for NHS Grampian with so many recent and planned developments including the Baird Family Hospital and the new National Treatment Centre. Moreover, with Aberdeen becoming the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and the establishment of a new hub for emergency medical retrival services, there are excellent opportunities for an enthusiastic appointee to develop interests in a wide choice of areas.

The 10 programmed activities job description comprises 8 direct clinical care and 2 supporting programmed activities. The Cardiothoracic unit in Aberdeen is a busy unit which covers the full range of adult cardiac surgery including off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic reconstructive surgery and less invasive cardiac surgery, and supports an expanding cardiac electrophysiology and percutaneous intervention service including transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

This replacement post, joining with 6 other Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetists, offers a combination of fixed and flexible sessions in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Intensive Care, together with the opportunity to flexibly cover Thoracic Surgery and other specialities. The successful candidate will join the Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care on-call rota which attracts 5% availability supplement. On call duties will be approximately 1:7 and on a non-resident basis.

Applications from candidates wishing to work on part time basis will equally be considered. It will also be possible to accommodate more flexible working arrangements including annualised job plans and job sharing.

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.
Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP).

Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made.  Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
