Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations.


NHS Education for Scotland is the official publisher of NHS workforce data on behalf of the Scottish Government having assumed this role from ISD. AHPs are currently reported with reference to the specific profession eg speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, orthoptics but with no additional detail regarding services provided or location of service delivery eg mental health. Work has been initiated to improve reporting and publishing of AHP workforce and this role will continue to progress the work already underway.


We are looking for a senior lead to progress the AHP workforce agenda. You will have a lead role in delivering on the recommendations set out in the report https://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/media/ctzlfxrr/allied-health-professional-workforce-planning.pdf prioritising the work underway to undertake Scotland wide reclassification of all AHP jobs to include significant additional details regarding AHP workforce across Scotland. You will either be an AHP with a special interest/experience in workforce OR a workforce planner with a special interest/experience with AHPs. We are seeking an experienced individual to join us and work across NMAHP and digital directorates in NES.

One key recommendation of the report was to

  • begin work to develop an agreed National Occupational Classification Index for AHPs to allow for workforce data that identifies AHP roles by profession and clinical, practice, or diagnostic delivery area

What you'll do 

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;

  • Implement the advice from the AHP Programme board to add categories to existing workforce data collation liasing with eESS programme board
  • Review previous work undertaken relevant to delivering this aspect of the AHP workforce NES programme and familiarise self with the proposals to adopt recommended occupational coding dataset regarding service delivery, ages and locations
  • Support the pilot of introducing changes to how AHP jobs are coded within NHS Scotland workforce systems
  • Testing dataset in current systems (eESS, Payroll) in approx. 4 agreed pilot sites
  • Testing reporting functionality with NES Digital
  • Testing links to Workforce Planning and Transforming Roles workstreams
  • Developing and enhancing written guidance to support future roll out of changes across Scotland
  • Creating a “test of change” to achieve proof of concept amongst range of AHP services including services outwith NHS providers
  • Liaise with AHP bodies eg AHP professional bodies, AHP Directors and with relevant other stakeholders including workforce leads, NES digital, SSSC workforce planners etc.
  • Consider the broader range of recommendations for NES role in supporting AHP workforce planning and advise on action plans to be set in place

What you'll bring

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Evidence of your passion and personal commitment to AHP workforce planning and workload measurement
  • Substantial experience in health and or social care environment   
  • Knowledge, experience and skills rooted in AHP workforce agenda 
  • An analytical approach and ability to link strategic priorities to actions required to progress the agenda
  • Experience of project management and support for piloting new approaches
  • Writing skills especially in production of guidance notes
