NHS Lanarkshire welcomes applicants for 5 substantive posts in General Surgery. Applicants with interests in either Upper and Lower GastrointestinaI Surgery are welcome.

Successful candidates will join either of the surgical teams at University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) or Hairmyres (UHH). Currently a business continuity exercise is in progress and candidates will join a medium term rota for Lanarkshire with a 1:12 commitment to their base site. Outreach daytime cover (2-3 times per year) to University Hospital Monklands will be included in all job plans with overnight cover for Monklands alternating between UHH and UHW on call consultants. Successful recruitment will allow for less frequent on call though a process of investment in General Surgical Services.  A full options appraisal exercise will be undertaken in the next 12-18 months that will inform the shape of General Surgical Receiving leading up to the opening of the Monklands Replacement Project in 2028.

UHW is the Surgical Trauma Unit for NHS Lanarkshire and collocates with Trauma and Orthopaedics on the site with 4 dedicated emergency theatres. UHW has a large colorectal unit carrying out laparoscopic malignant and benign resections. Benign Interests include Sacral Nerve stimulation, complex inflammatory Bowel Disease, laparoscopic ventral rectopexy and ESD. UHW is the centre for the pre–assessment service for the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme in Lanarkshire. Applicants would join established teams looking for expansion beyond singlehanded sub-specialty practices.

UHW is also the Regional Centre for Specialist Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Services including oesophago-gastric cancer resections, bariatric surgery and complex hiatal/biliary surgery. The Upper GI Team actively manage the endoscopic palliation of advanced Upper GI malignancy through an outpatient fast track pathway. The UHH General Surgical Team consists of Upper Gastrointestinal and Colorectal sub-specialists.  UHH is the interventional radiology centre for NHS Lanarkshire and a regional vascular centre. UHH is also has the largest Gastroenterology team in NHS Lanarkshire with very close working links to the General Surgical team. The excellent Anaesthetic & ICU teams work closely with the surgeons and the Shared Decision Making Clinic is a leading example of multidisciplinary working, embracing the principles of Realistic Medicine. The outstanding endoscopy department is currently complimented by a Vanguard unit on site, providing four fully staffed endoscopy rooms.

The UHH Colorectal team provides a full laparoscopic service for both malignant and benign disease and is now the NHS Lanarkshire centre for Robotic surgery with the DaVinci Xi robot system on site and available. Other benign interests include laser therapy for haemorrhoids and fistulae, Karydakis flap surgery for Pilonidal sinus disease, therapeutic colonoscopy and Trans-anal minimally invasive surgery for rectal polyps.

The Upper GI team provide a wide range of laparoscopic benign services, palliative cancer services, and therapeutic endoscopy. There is significant expertise in complex biliary and hiatal surgery.

All 3 NHS Lanarkshire site join for weekly Lanarkshire wide Upper and Lower GI Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and recently a complex polyp MDT has been set up with wide input form the multidisciplinary team.

Across NHS Lanarkshire there are a number of weekly GI radiology meetings aimed at all members of the surgical team

Depending on the skills and wishes of the candidate they could be based in either UHH or UHW with excellent opportunities for cross site networking and driving skill and service development.

The precise details of the job plan will be dependent on the successful candidate’s subspecialty training and interests.
