Job Advert

We are looking for salaried General Practitioners (GPs) to work in our Out of Hours Service in Dumfries and/or Galloway.  Salary is £110,057 pro-rata and there are various hours/contracts available.  We have two centres that are staffed by GPs. One in the West of the Region (Stranraer) and one in the East of the Region (Dumfries). We are flexible with the hours and if there is interest in working in both Primary Care In Hours and Secondary Care we would be willing to discuss this with you to give you more of a portfolio career. While permanent and fixed term contracts are available we are also happy to offer rotational or 18 week contracts for those who wish to use Dumfries and Galloway as a base to explore.

The Out of Hours Service is currently developing a Hub and Spoke Model. This is a very exciting time for us as we work towards this model which will provide a much better service for our patients ensuring that they are seen by the right person at the right time.  The General Practitioner will be the general medical specialist who will oversee a multi-disciplinary team. These will include community adult general nursing, advanced practitioners and pharmacists. We also have Healthcare Support Workers who will assist you when undertaking a home visit and help in the centres with routine observations as well as ECGs.

There will be opportunities for Mentoring of Medical Students as well as Nursing students if so desired. Support and access to Courses and professional development opportunities can also be offered from within our own Education Department.

Our main base is within the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary near to the Accident and Emergency Department.

The successful applicant should be motivated to provide excellent patient care as well as taking a lead role in the ongoing development of clinical services within the service.
It would be desirable if you have experience of both in and Out of Hours services and have a facilitative and supportive style of working.  Successful applicants will hold a Certificate of Prescribed Experience from JCPTGP or equivalent with RCGP membership being advantageous.

Dumfries and Galloway is a rural area with easy access to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Northern England and Ireland.  The region offers excellent schools and good quality affordable housing.  There are abundant local amenities and superb leisure and sporting facilities with fitness clubs, golf courses, fishing, sailing, hill walking and other rural pursuits set in beautiful surroundings.

You will also benefit from being in a rural location with instant access to the main motorway leading to the north and south of the country.  There are a variety of stunning locations within the region and the mix of beautiful countryside with access to urban opportunities. There will also be an opportunity for you to come to the area prior to interview to provide you with a tour of our new hospital/out of hours area as well as taking the opportunity to show you around Dumfries and Galloway if you are considering relocating.

Whether you are currently coming towards the end of your training, looking for a rewarding career opportunity, or a ‘taster’ period in remote and rural healthcare before making more permanent career choices, please contact us for an informal chat, to find out more about this exciting team and discuss this opportunity.
The NHS is self insured and any work carried out during Out of Hours is covered by the CNORIS Scheme.
