The post is based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Specialist outpatient services may also be delivered at Gartnavel General and New Victoria Hospitals from as soon as possible for 1 year.

 

A broad training in general internal medicine is offered and there are excellent opportunities for sub-specialty experience, research and audit. 

 

This post will support the West of Scotland Anaphylaxis service and provide in-patient care on the acute rota for medical patients at the QEUH. There will be an opportunity to develop a special interest in antibiotic allergy and de-labelling on a national programme.


The West of Scotland Anaphylaxis service is among the largest adult allergy units in the UK, providing investigating and managing severe allergy for around 2.3 million adults in West and Central Scotland. We are expert in the full range of type I allergy disciplines including food, latex, venom and drug allergy. We have focussed clinical services for anaphylaxis under anaesthesia and adolescent food allergy. In addition we have expertise in airways allergy and asthma.


The Anaphylaxis team comprises 2 consultant respiratory physicians, a senior Associate Specialist, a General Practitioner, a Dietician and a Specialist nurse. We have strong links to our regional Immunology Laboratory colleagues and have access to state of the art investigation tools including component testing and risk assessment.


Nationally we contribute to the Children’s and Young Adult Allergy Network (CYANS).

           

Outpatient clinics will be Severe Allergy clinics and the successful applicant will learn the correct investigation strategies for different allergy presentations and become proficient at skin prick testing, intra dermal allergen exposure and the correct interpretation of serological testing. They will learn risk assessment in allergy and the large range of differential diagnoses comprising the common presentations in allergy. In addition they will learn the range of avoidance strategies, adrenaline auto-injector management and prescription.


On-call commitment will be to contribute a full commitment to the on-call rota at the QEUH including daytime and evening on-call contribution to the IAU or ARU. In addition there will be a commitment to provide day time ward cover in a selected ward of the medical unit in the QEUH. The level of this commitment will be dependent on the seniority of the successful applicant.


It is expected that the post-holder will develop their CV during this post by carrying out clinical governance projects within the Anaphylaxis service and will have the opportunity to engage in targeted research during this post.


To practice medicine in the you need to hold both GMC registration and a licence to practise.


This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and is not recognised for training but appropriate educational supervision will be provided.
