Specialist Technician, Pharmacy Quality Risk & Governance Services

The NHS Lothian Pharmacy Service covers primary, secondary and tertiary care services and strives to ensure patients and the public achieve the best outcomes from their medicines. The pharmacy service provides clinical care to patients, ensures effective and efficient use of medicines and supports NHS Lothian to achieve its corporate objectives.  

Pharmacy Quality Risk & Governance Services is looking for an enthusiastic individual to fill this Specialist Technician post. You will join a small team, based at the Western General, but with Board wide responsibilities, who are committed to the provision and development of high quality services.

The post holder will lead in the delivery of a range of delegated quality control services provided to customers including: 

  • environmental monitoring for aseptic preparation services
  • process/operator validation within aseptic services
  • temperature monitoring and mapping of storage equipment/areas
  • provision of Quality Control activity for piped medical gas systems 
  • supporting the management of unlicensed medicines used within the Pharmacy Service.
  • provision of specialist advice on those areas

The successful applicant will also have line management responsibilities for two team members.

The post holder must be either a registered pharmacy technician or be a graduate in a relevant science subject e.g. chemistry / biology who is eligible to be a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry or Institute of Biology as appropriate to the degree held.  To carry out this role, the applicant must be eligible to achieve registration or already be on the QC (MGPS) register. Training will be provided if required to enable registration. Applicants should have a good working knowledge of aseptic dispensing services and Good Manufacturing Practice.

Confident use of Microsoft packages, internet and IT technology is also essential.   You will be a proactive and self-motivated individual, paying attention to detail with a professional, confident and flexible approach. Excellent interpersonal, time management and organisational skills are vital to enable you to prioritise effectively, work to strict deadlines and ensure provision of a well co-ordinated, efficient and professional service at all times.
