As part of significant service redesign, NHS Forth Valley are developing an Advanced Practice workforce model within the Emergency Department. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative team that will shape the future of the Emergency Department.

We are looking for highly experienced and dynamic nurses who have worked in autonomous roles at level 7 and who will embrace the challenge of transitioning to level 8 practitioners in the emergency department.  This transition will encompass a broader and deeper level of clinical decision making and autonomy.

The post holder will be able to manage complex emergency presentations, provide autonomous and expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to patients. They will provide direct clinical management of patients and provide education and support to members of the ED team. The post holder will be able to assess, diagnose and treat the majority of clinical presentations to the Emergency Department. ​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​If required, the successful candidates will initially undertake academic study and clinical competency frameworks to underpin evidence of the broader clinical role. On completion of training, candidates will become a Senior ANP at Band 8A and will cover the following presentations:

Along with high clinical expectations, successful candidates will also ensure that they address the non-clinical pillars of practice including evidence, research and development, facilitation of learning and leadership.

Credentials for Band 8a Senior ANP:

  • Experience of working within ED
  • Advanced practice experience as an ANP or ENP
  • Completion of HEI accredited clinical courses.
    • Independent Prescribing Qualification – V300
    • Clinical Examination & Advanced History Taking course.
    • Minor Injuries or equivalent
    • Recognition and Management of the Acutely Unwell Adult or equivalent
    • Clinical Decision Making – lower acuity or Primary Care
  • Evidence of commitment to developing others, self and service.


  • Experience of working within ED
  • Advanced practice experience as an ANP or ENP
