Applications are invited for this replacement post of Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in Colorectal Surgery.


The successful applicant will become an integral part of the surgical services for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. In particular she/he will join a highly motivated and cohesive group of colorectal surgeons with a strong interest in research and innovation.. The General Surgical Service is supported by excellent ITU/HDU facilities; a radiology department with  two CT scanners and two MRI scanners; an active GI cancerMDT; superbly refurbished endoscopy and theatre suiteswith a full range of Olympus endoscopes and  high definition laparoscopic equipment. Raigmore Hospital is one of the five cancer centres in Scotland. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and neo-adjuvant chemoradiation are administered on site. We support a range of oncology research trials.  The colorectal MDT sees >200 new cancer diagnoses each year. We have separate pelvic floor and inflammatory bowel disease MDTs. Complex surgery including ileoanal pouch formation, transanal excision of polyps and cancers and High Resolution Anoscopy is performed on site in Raigmore.Hepatic resections are also performed in Inverness. Likewise laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and sacral nerve stimulation is available for patients with pelvic floor disorders with dedicated GI physiologist/pelvic floor physiotherapists on site. We are a highly active research unit with three research fellows; our projects range from, leading clinical trials (ScotCap, eTHoS), to simulation in surgical training, digital medicine and clinical education; we recruit to a high proportion of colorectal clinical trials. We are home to the Scottish Surgical Boot Camp which is run from our superb clinical skills centre.


The Department of General Surgery and Urology comprises twelve consultant general surgeons with special interests covering, colorectal, upper GI/HPB, vascular and paediatric surgery. In addition, there are three oncoplastic breast consultants providing the breast reconstruction service, and four consultant urologists. There are visiting paediatric, plastic and neurosurgical consultant staff. There are three full time colorectal nurse specialists and associated research nurses. Junior staff consists of one staff grade surgeon, three research fellows, eight specialist trainees and nine FY1s between General Surgery and Urology.


Raigmore Hospital is the principal elective acute hospital for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.   Together with the smaller surgical units in Oban, Fort William and Wick the department provides a comprehensive surgical service to the whole of the Highland population of roughly 315,000.   Tertiary services are also provided to the population of the Western Isles (30,000). Raigmore is the second campus of the Aberdeen University Medical School and the main campus for The University of the Highlands and Islands. There is a very active clinical research facility, clinical skills centre and a multi-professional research laboratory in the Centre for Health Sciences, which is on site (www.centreforhealthscience.com).
