The Role

Available from April 2020, but candidates interested in a longer duration appointment to continue from August 2020 are also welcome to apply. You would gain wide experience in Orthopaedics & Trauma and also supervised exposure to Emergency Medicine and Ortho-geriatrics.  Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 284 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.

There is a full shift rota shared with six colleagues.  Duties will include clinical responsibility for the care and treatment of patients in the orthopaedics ward, assisting in theatre (for experience therefore not compulsory) and out-patient clinics.  You would also treat emergency presentations in the Emergency Department with initial examination, treatment and appropriate referrals when necessary.  You may participate in the Hospital at Night rota depending on experience.  There is flexibility with the experience offered to meet your training needs.

This post is not recognised for training purposes but there is an excellent Postgraduate educational programme, good library facilities on site and protected formal teaching within the unit.  You will be able to access protected development time / study leave and a study leave grant.  An educational supervisor (a senior clinician within the unit) will be appointed to support you.  You can formulate a Personal Development Plan after discussion with your supervisor.  The content will be agreed with you and is flexible according to your needs and interests as there are multiple opportunities for your development.

You should have completed recent training grade experience (FY1, FY2 or SHO level or equivalent) preferably with experience in Accident & Emergency.  No previous orthopaedics experience is required.  Full GMC registration and a licence to practice is essential.  The post may be most suitable for doctors at FY2, ST1 or ST2 level who are seeking out of programme experience but all appropriately qualified applicants will be seriously considered. Applicants interested in a post only in Emergency Medicine may also be accommodated so just ask.
