Who We Are  


NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.


The Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) Team are seeking?to appoint? an enthusiastic high performing, highly motivated team member, to lead  the development, coordination and contribution?of maternity care support workers to implementation of ‘Best Start’. 


The successful candidate will lead on the development of education and training resources for maternity care support workers and support and facilitate midwives to explore how healthcare support worker roles can be enhanced to implemented the Best Start proposals.  This workstream will also include the development of neonatal HCSWs.  


The core function of the NMAHP Directorate is to support the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, health and social care chaplains and their support workers.??The Directorate is also responsible for providing education, training and workforce development across wider professional groups and disciplines, often in partnership with other agencies, to support key policy imperatives such as Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI), dementia and health and social care integration.


What you'll do   


Key tasks will include but are not restricted to; 


  • Scope and explore, by engaging with key stakeholder groups, the role development of maternity care support workers so that they can contribute as part of a multidisciplinary team to the Best Start programme  


  • Develop education and training opportunities for maternity care support workers so that they can acquire skills to assist midwives in implementation of the Best Start Programme e.g breastfeeding including infant feeding, parenting skills and the provision of baby care.   


  • Implement workshops within NHS Board areas for Band 6/7 midwives to facilitate discussion in relation to enhanced service delivery, team composition and explore opportunities for HCSWs to be developed and educated to support the needs of the service.


  • Work with NHS Boards and neonatal staff to develop a clear role definition, competency framework, training and skills pathway for non-registered neonatal staff. 


  • Contribute to the development of the Midwifery Career Framework which will encompass HCSW roles levels 2 to 4. 


What you'll bring  


These will include but are not restricted to; 


  • Experienced registered midwife or nurse 


  • Experience in designing and developing educational programmes 


  • Experience of facilitation 


  • Experience and understanding of group dynamics and organisational change processes 


  • Significant knowledge of the Best Start policy context 


  • Flexible approach to learning and problem solving  



The post will have a flexible base, although travel around Scotland will be required.
