Public Health Scotland will be established as the new public health body on 1 April 2020, with an ambitious vision of a ‘Scotland where everybody thrives’. Your role as Director for place and wellbeing will be an exciting opportunity to lead the development of place based approaches to improving health and wellbeing in Scotland. You will also be part of a member of the executive leadership team, responsible for setting the strategic direction of the new organisation and building teams who can deliver this.
With over 1100 staff and an annual budget of around £60 million, Public Health Scotland will provide authoritative information and services to support people and communities in protecting and achieving better health and wellbeing.
Public Health Scotland is a unique partnership between the Scottish Government and Local Government, and this joint-accountability will help us to have a far greater impact, and to collaborate with a far greater number of partners on health and wellbeing.
Public Health Scotland will also lead the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and will contribute to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence, working to reduce the burden of preventable illness on our health and care services.
The role of Director for Place and Wellbeing is to lead, plan and design place based interventions to increase healthy life expectancy and reduce health inequality. In order to achieve this, you will need to be an influential leader, and effective in your collaborations with a wide range of partners to drive improvements in outcomes. The role will have a particular focus on supporting communities to improve health and wellbeing and ensuring that national and local public health functions support and strengthen related partnerships. There will be a particular focus on ensuring core services are maintained and creating capacity to drive future innovation and transformation across the public health system to meet the needs of communities.
Location and Working Pattern
This is a full time post and will be based in either Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Essential Criteria
It is essential that you can provide evidence of:
- Experience of working in complex systems with proven strong leadership skills
- You should be able to demonstrate the ability to navigate change across organisational boundaries
- You should have the ability to work with a range of stakeholders to bring a change that has improved systems
- You will have a proven ability to work on your own initiative and as part of an executive team, leading and driving the development of PHS and coping with the demands of a fast paced changing environment in the delivery of reform
- You will demonstrate your ability to manage sizeable budgets
- You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate effectively with senior external and internal stakeholders.
- You will have strong analytical skills, with the ability to review current position, critically evaluate business processes and embed new practices.
- You will have a strong risk mind set, experience of defining and implementing controls to safeguard business interests.
