Job Advert

We seek an enthusiastic and committed individual to work within Perth and Kinross Health and Social Care Partnership’s psychiatry of old age service. The organisation values the knowledge, experience and leadership skills of consultant old age psychiatrists.

Perth and Kinross is an area of central Scotland renowned for its natural beauty and excellent transport links, with Edinburgh and Glasgow both just an hour away. It is an area of approximately 2000 square miles with Perth as the main centre and several market towns such as Kinross, Auchterarder, Crieff, Aberfeldy, Pitlochry and Blairgowrie all 20-30 miles away. Perth and Kinross has one of the largest populations of elderly people in Scotland and there is a mixture of all levels of socio-economic class and deprivation.

This 9.5 session post is based at Murray Royal Hospital and includes:

  • Community work in the north-west Perthshire Older Adults’ CMHT (3.5 DCCs). North-west Perthshire includes areas such as Stanley, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Kinloch Rannoch. The CMHT are based at Pitlochry Community Hospital and there is a care home liaison nurse who covers North west as well as the Strathmore region. PCH also has a GP inpatient unit, where the successful candidate would be expected to provide liaison psychiatry input, but there are no old age psychiatry beds. The sub-locality has 4630 residents aged over 65 and 5 care homes with a total of 160 beds. Outpatient clinics are held at PCH, in GP surgeries and at Murray Royal Hospital.

  • Inpatients in Leven Ward, our old age psychiatry functional ward at Murray Royal Hospital (2.5 DCCs). The ward has 14 beds in total and would be shared equally between the post holder and another consultant psychiatrist.

  • ECT lead (1.5 DCCs). This involves provision of ECT twice weekly in the Murray Royal Hospital ECT suite, which is SEAN accredited with excellence. Cover for absence is provided by the ECT deputy.

  • 2 SPA, including 1 SPA for appraisal and revalidation and 1 SPA for other activities selected by the successful candidate, which may include medical education, research, management, etc. The successful candidate may be asked to supervise a junior doctor, which would require 0.25 of this SPA. Consultants with a significant local teaching or research commitment may be awarded Honorary Senior Clinical Teacher status by the University of Dundee.

Prospective candidates who feel their skills lie in other areas of the service can be reassured that the current consultant group are willing to be flexible within the job planning process and a change of duties could be negotiated prior to acceptance of the post. We welcome applications from individuals wishing to work less than full-time. The department has an excellent track record of supporting medical staff with health problems. We are also currently advertising another full time post which includes community work in the Strathmore region of Perthshire, old age psychiatry liaison at Perth Royal Infirmary and ECT deputy; candidates are welcome to apply for either or both posts.

Interviews are scheduled to take place on – Monday 20 April 2020.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of CCT or CESR (CP) at the date of interview for the post.  Anticipated interview date is Monday 20 April 2020.

NHS Tayside is committed to equality and diversity and welcomes applicants from all sections of the community.
