Consultant Physician in Acute and General Medicine

University Hospital Wishaw


We are seeking applications from enthusiastic and innovative individuals who want to join our existing team of 21 Consultant Physicians in University Hospital Wishaw. This post is one of two new posts being created to develop new and innovative ways of working, centred on our existing medical admissions, GP assessment and ambulatory care units, and to develop medical leadership within our medical high dependency unit. Suitably qualified applicants will be encouraged to develop a professional interest to complement existing specialist services. The successful candidate for this post will work with the existing Consultant Acute Physicians in providing a comprehensive acute medical service.  The post holder will have a commitment to Out of Hours Acute Medical Receiving and on call (approximately 1 in 32).


Our team is a friendly, enthusiastic team committed to the development of Acute Medicine within Wishaw and NHS Lanarkshire.  We are supported by a team of Advanced Practitioners, and committed to the training of Foundation Doctors, Core and Higher Specialist medical trainees, GP Trainees and Acute Care Common Stem trainees.


Wishaw is a medium sized town situated in the centre of Lanarkshire. It has excellent transport links and is only 20 minutes travelling time from Glasgow with access to excellent shops and first class theatres, visitor attractions and sporting facilities. Edinburgh is also within easy travelling distance. Both cities have international airports and a host of leisure activities. Wishaw is only 10 minutes from the picturesque Clyde Valley where there are amazing opportunities for those with an interest in outdoor pursuits. There are options for housing in the city, town or countryside. Employment by NHS Lanarkshire gives discounted access to a wide range of sporting facilities


Applicants must have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the GMC and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC’s Specialist Register in Acute and General Medicine or be within 6 months of award of CCT at the time of interview.


The post is offered on the basis of 10 PA’s with the possibility of negotiating additional SPA sessions. Applicants who, for personal reasons, are unable to work full time are eligible to be considered.
