NHS Forth Valley seeks to appoint a Locum Consultant with either working in hospital Paediatrics and Neonates (BAPM Level 2 Neonatal Unit) or with a Special interest in Diabetes/Endocrine.


This is a fixed term 12 month post to provide maternity leave cover.


The Combined Department of Child Health currently has a team of 12 Consultant Paediatricians (General Paediatrics), 2 Associate Specialists, 7 Specialty Doctor Paediatricians, Specialty Trainees, Foundation Year II and GP specialist trainees and Clinical Development Fellows. Advance Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (APNP), Enhanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ENNP) and 2 Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNP).


The department provides comprehensive Paediatric and neonatal care to a population of 310,000 people with 60,000 children under the age of 16 years and about 3,200 deliveries per annum. There is a 25 bedded combined medical and surgical Paediatric ward; a 20 bed Neonatal Unit supporting a Consultant led obstetric unit and an 8 bed Day Care Unit.


Forth Valley Paediatric department participates in several regional and national Managed Clinical networks facilitating the maintenance of specialist interests for all senior medical staff. Forth Valley Paediatric department has teaching commitments to undergraduates and postgraduates from Edinburgh, Tayside and Glasgow. Involvement in research is encouraged and active participation in the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (Paediatric, Neonatal and Maternity) is well established.


This appointment aims to:


Option 1 - support the delivery of our hospital-based Children’s medical services, with acute weeks in hospital Paediatrics, Neonatal hot weeks and Paediatric Outpatients. Acute post includes a share of a non-resident on call and out of hours working. Acute weeks and on-calls are currently on 1:9 rota.


Option 2 - support the delivery of Diabetes/Endocrine Services predominantly in Outpatient settings but also offering advice and expertise within the field for patients admitted to Children’s ward (e.g. New onset of diabetes counselling etc.), teaching and guidelines development and other MDT working within dedicated team. We would not envisage out of hours or on-call working.


Option 3 – combination of 1 and 2


There will be also extensive opportunities for teaching and training of junior medical staff, nursing staff and Allied Health Professionals.
