Why work for us?

Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience.  We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.

Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 288 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.  The Hospital lies at the edge of the attractive small town of Melrose. In 2018 Melrose was ranked by the Sunday Times as ‘The Best Place to Live in Scotland’ sitting between the Eildon Hills and the River Tweed. It has a number of independent shops, small supermarkets and restaurants with professional services and supermarkets in Galashiels.  The Borders offers an outstanding quality of life with reasonably priced housing in small towns, villages or the countryside. There are excellent local schools and travel links north and south. The Borders railway offers easy access to Edinburgh. The area is renowned for unspoilt beauty, rugby, including the annual Melrose 7s, and the Borders Book Festival. Local high quality sporting activities include mountain biking, fishing and riding.   A relocation package/assistance up to full Inland Revenue limits with the possibility of temporary accommodation in the local area is available for the successful candidate.

All new consultants are welcome to join the consultant development programme.   The programme seeks to provide you with support for the development of leadership and management skills. There are also opportunities for professional coaching and mentoring – an established BGH consultant will be identified as a “buddy” in your first few weeks.

The Role

The new Consultant Physician with an interest in stroke medicine will join our existing stroke Physician and the wider stroke clinical team including our stroke nurse specialists.  You will participate in the general medical rota at Borders General Hospital along with 15 consultant physician colleagues.  The purpose built Borders stroke unit was opened in 2013 and consists of 12 acute and rehabilitation stroke beds. The stroke team has close working relationships with the tertiary centre in Edinburgh, and tele-medicine links to the South East Scotland stroke service out of hours.

Candidates must hold MRCP or equivalent and must also be registered with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register for General (Internal) Medicine or be within 6 months of expected date of obtaining CCT or equivalent.  A CCT or equivalent in stroke medicine is preferred and you must be able to demonstrate sub-specialty training or equivalent experience in stroke medicine.

Informal enquiries and visits are welcome.  Any applicant wishing to view the department or discuss the vacancy can initially speak to Staffing on 01896 826167.
