This is an opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Healthcare scientist to work in the specialist Haematology department which provides a full range of clinical and diagnostic services to NHS Tayside, NE Fife and South Grampian.


The Blood Sciences Department is based on two sites at Ninewells Hospital, a large Teaching hospital and Medical School, Dundee that includes the Scottish Bowel Screening Laboratory, and Perth Royal Infirmary. The Haematology section is based solely at Ninewells Hospital


The department has an established team of Clinical, Scientific and Technical staff. We are looking to train up a keen and enthusiastic new member of staff. Post qualification professional development is encouraged and supported.


We are looking for a member of staff that can demonstrate team spirit, initiative, flexibility and enthusiasm and have proven ability to support further development of the service. You will work with a considerable degree of autonomy and have the responsibility for providing professional, scientific and technical leadership, and will be managing a team of experienced BMS staff.


You will be working in a redesigned state of the art laboratory with Leukaemia diagnosis using Flow Cytometry using the Becton Dickinson FACS Canto for Immunophenotyping, cytochemistry, capillary zone electrophoresis Sebia analyser for Haemoglobinopathies and HPLC Menarini for HbA1C assays, Coagulation Factor assays by semi automated (IL TOPS) and manual assays, Platelet aggregometry, Lupus screening, vW assays, NPT / POCT Community Anticoagulation testing.


This postholder supervises the Department of Blood Sciences specialist Haematology discipline to deliver training to ISO accreditation standards. The department also holds IBMS Training lab approval until 2020. You will also be expected to liaise closely with the Service Manager to support the training of all grades of laboratory staff.


As the Senior BMS postholder you will be expected to work closely with the other senior BMS, and the Blood Sciences Associate Service Managers to ensure continued UKAS accreditation; this post involves Out of Hours working, weekend, and some early evening and Public Holiday duties.


You must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and must possess a M.Sc. or FIBMS with either the IBMS Specialist portfolio, or extensive post registration laboratory experience and have worked at BMS Band 6 [Specialist BMS] in a Blood sciences laboratory discipline.

Consideration will be given to applicants working towards an MSc or FIBMS. The post will subsequently be considered as a training post (band 7 Annex 21) with an expectation that the post holder must achieve the MSc or FIBMS qualification within 2 years.
