Job Advert

This is an exciting and challenging time for Public Health and Intelligence (PHI) and Health Protection Scotland (HPS) as we move to become a part of a new Public Health Body for Scotland, to be known as Public Health Scotland.

This is a unique opportunity to work, not only in national Health Protection but also to work in partnership to deliver Public Health services which enable and support a safer and healthier Scotland. This will involve working with NHS Scotland, the Scottish Government Health Directorates, NHS Education Scotland, NHS Health Scotland, healthcare providers, academia and others.

We are currently seeking candidates for 1.5 WTE permanent Healthcare Scientist (Epidemiology) Band 6 posts. These posts will be based in Glasgow within Health Protection Scotland. The post holders will work in selected areas across the respiratory and immunisation teams, for example, on influenza and other vaccine preventable diseases such as meningococcal disease.

You will support a full range of public health activities including collecting, managing, analysing and reporting surveillance data from routine and non routine sources. For example, these might include the drafting of the HPS weekly respiratory report, monitoring and reporting of vaccine uptake and evaluation of vaccine programme effectiveness.

Responsibilities will also include liaising and collaborating with a number of stakeholders such as policymakers, NHS boards, laboratory staff, clinicians and other experts.

You will have an enthusiastic approach and excellent organisation skills; a primary degree in a scientific or clinical subject; training or experience in epidemiological methods; well developed analytical skills, including familiarity with statistical analysis tools (e.g. R, SPSS, STATA); and the ability to critically appraise and interpret surveillance and epidemiological data.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills and have highly developed verbal and written communication skills. You will have a proven track record as a team player and be able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

It is vital that you demonstrate the NSS values of working with respect and care, openness and integrity, to focus on our customers, demonstrate commitment to each other and excel and improve. A postgraduate degree in a relevant field; record of publications, project management experience and knowledge of the NHS are desirable but not essential.

Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

Our benefits package includes pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits.
