Full Time – 37 ½ hours per week

Fixed Term until 31/03/2021

Salary Range - £31,800 - £39,169 per annum


The Gilbert Bain Hospital is based in Shetland’s main town of Lerwick and provides general medical, surgical, rehabilitation and maternity inpatient services to a population of approximately 22,000.  The hospital also has an extensive outpatient department which is supported by Visiting Specialist Consultants, A&E facilities and is the base for the majority of Allied Health Professionals.


We are looking for dynamic individuals to join our theatre team. The candidates will be required to work predominantly in anaesthetics/ recovery providing care for a mix of paediatrics and adults. There may be a requirement to work as part of the scrub team on occasions. The candidates will be required, as part of the anaesthetic team, to provide care to patients in the Respiratory Care Unit, should the need arise.

The anaesthetic team also provides support for emergency and critical care throughout the hospital including A&E and Maternity. There is an on-call commitment for which an allowance is payable


As a Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner, you will have a nationally recognised qualification in Anaesthetic Assistance or the NES Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants. You will have excellent communication skills, be able to deliver high quality care within a high pressure environment and have previous experience with working within a wide range of surgical specialities.

Candidates should be able to work under pressure, be flexible and have a good attendance record. It would be desirable for candidates to have completed ILS/ALS training.


This contract is for a fixed-term until 31st March 2021. The reason for the fixed-term contract is Covid recovery planning. If you wish to apply for this post as a secondment opportunity, you will need to discuss with your line manager before submitting an application.
