Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Band 7) SEAT Forensic Services
Please note: As this post is part-time the salary will be pro-rata.
NHS Lothian is host to a unique South East Scotland regional collaborative delivering a specialist forensic medical and nurse led police custody healthcare service. The post of Advanced Nurse Practitioner in forensic medicine is a new and exciting opportunity for resilient, compassionate and trauma informed nurses to join a well established team of forensic nurses and physicians. We are looking for highly motivated staff who will contribute in this exciting opportunity to shape the future of advanced forensic nursing. We are seeking highly motivated and experienced nurses who will embrace the challenge of this dynamic role. They will provide direct patient management and have sound clinical knowledge and highly developed clinical decision-making skills. Applicants should possess the ability to prioritise fluctuating workloads, remain focused, work across professional boundaries and be flexible in an extremely busy and atypical health environment. The service operates 24/7 and the post holder will work rotate between day and night duties.
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will be expected to assist and support our forensic physicians in the forensic medical examination of victims who have been raped or sexually assaulted. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will have a key role in the delivery of trauma informed and patient centred care, and will use their advanced practice competencies to deliver clinical care which will meet the holistic – and often complex - care needs of victims of sexual crime. This new role is the collaboratives response to the Scottish Government Task Force for the Improvement of Services for Victims of Rape and Sexual Assault and therefore is subject to a genuine occupational requirement under the Equality Act 2010. The post is gender specific to female applicants.
As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the collaborative, you will also use your advanced practice competencies to provide clinical support to our experienced forensic nursing team who lead on the delivery of general forensic medical services and police custody healthcare.
Applicants for Advanced Nurse Practitioner will have a postgraduate diploma in advanced practice which must include independent prescribing, advanced clinical examination and clinical decision making qualifications. We will also consider applications for trainee posts (Band 7 Annex U) and will support the development of individuals to meet the advanced practice competencies and will be expected to commence the postgraduate diploma in advanced practice in January 2021. Applicants for trainee posts should have demonstrated evidence of undertaking courses relevant to the advanced practice pathway e.g. non medical prescribing, clinical decision making course.
As a South East collaborative service, applicants will be required to travel throughout the region and a valid driver’s licence is therefore necessary. In additional to PVG checks, the post holder will further require to be vetted to Level 2 by Police Scotland which has a requirement that the post holder has been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
For trainees covered by Annex U where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:
- up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
- more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
- more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
- more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.
