TRAUMA & ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY ST1


Scotland is recruiting to Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery ST1 programmes for August 2021 start dates.

Scotland is unique, being the only location in the UK with training opportunities in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at ST1 level.

These training programmes will lead to CCT/CESR subject to satisfactory progression. The Postgraduate Dean confirmed that this programme has the required educational and Dean’s approval. The Training Programme is open to those who may, either from the outset or subsequently, wish to train less than full time, subject to approval.

Selection Process

For 2021 recruitment, due to the ongoing global pandemic each specialty has developed two approved recruitment plans; Plan A is the specialty’s preferred selection process, Plan B will be adopted, on a specialty by specialty basis, should delivery of Plan A become impossible. 


For Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery ST1 the following recruitment plans will be followed:


Plan A

  • Verification of self-assessment scores
  • Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to an online 30-minute interview covering the following areas: Handover, Clinical & Portfolio Review
  • Appointment will be based on the following weightings:
    • Shortlisting – 25%
    • Handover – 25%
    • Clinical – 25%
    • Portfolio – 25%


Plan B

  • Appointments will be made on 100% of the verified shortlisting score.
