Who We Are
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.
NES Optometry primarily supports the provision of General Ophthalmic Services in Scotland. It supports up-skilling of eyecare practitioners, to facilitate delivery of safe, effective eyecare to the population of Scotland.

What you'll do
Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;
- Develop a robust system of mentorship support for accredited NESGAT optometrists, to support the delivery of safe, high quality, effective glaucoma care.
- Develop peer support networks for glaucoma care.
- Provide appropriate CPD for optometrists providing community glaucoma care.
- Support optometrists in providing a new community-based glaucoma service including participating in appropriate audit and clinical governance activities.
- Evaluate impact of mentorship and support for optometrists providing community glaucoma care.
- Work with colleagues in other health care teams to utilise areas of best practice when developing mentorship and support resources for optometry.
What you'll bring
These will include but are not restricted to;
- The post holder will develop and lead the first national mentorship programme for optometry in Scotland, supporting the management of glaucoma and ocular hypertension in the community. The mentorship programme will be developed within the context of newly developed frameworks, requiring interpretation and analysis of complex information. The postholder will be required to consider factors including continuing professional development, clinical governance and clinical service requirements in developing the mentorship programme. They will work with other directorates within NES who have existing mentorship programmes, and other relevant stakeholders, using this expertise to inform the development of mentorship for optometry.
- The post holder will provide expertise in glaucoma management, to support colleagues as they take on this remit in practice. This requires highly specialised knowledge of a range of complex clinical conditions. The post holder will be required to demonstrate this knowledge and disseminate it to others, providing support and encouragement to promote the practitioner’s continuing professional development.
