Job Advert

An opportunity is available for a Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in Gastrointestinal surgery to join the General Surgery Department at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary, located in the south of Scotland.

The Department of Surgery provide a comprehensive elective and emergency general surgical service, with day case/endoscopy/out-patient services also provided at the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer. The combined Gastro-intestinal Services are largely provided by surgeons with an Upper GI interest and colorectal interest, and they deal with 130 new cases of colorectal cancers and 40-50 oesophagogastric cancers per annum.

As a Consultant in this department you must have strong general surgery skills and most special interests can be considered, with a preference for Paediatric,  Endocrinology and GI. Joining a team of 12 Consultants, you will contribute to the ongoing development of general and laparoscopic surgery as well as participate in the 1:8 emergency on-call rota. Experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery is highly desirable.

Departmental educational meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings, and journal club are held monthly and the department is supported by and active and enthusiastic Research and Development team. Currently 33 research projects (out of 147) are surgical and adult cancer related which includes local, national and international projects.

This is a great opportunity to join a very supportive and inclusive department, who will accommodate a range of special interests. Working at this newly build district general hospital, you will have access to the state-of-the-art integrated operating theatres. The location is really outstandingly beautiful, with the landscape as a key feature in the design of the new hospital building. Dumfries is a great place to relocate to, it is well located for access to Scottish cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, but also just a short drive from Carlisle in the north of England.

It is an exciting time in Dumfries and Galloway as the new District General Hospital opened in December 2017.  The hospital is based on the western outskirts of the town. The new hospital will ensure NHS Dumfries and Galloway staff are able to continue to provide high quality clinical care to the population of Dumfries and Galloway in a modern environment.

The region offers beautiful countryside, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to forests, hills and rolling plains. There is a wide range of activities on offer, with watersports, fishing, birdwatching, golf, mountain-biking or cycling along the network of rural roads and much more.  House prices are low, schools are good and you are within 2 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lake District and Newcastle.

Prospective candidates will require to be on the GMC Specialist Register.
