Job Advert

This is an exciting opportunity to apply for this newly created Locum Consultant Cardiology post to support the increased workload, expansion and development of the Cardiology Department at NHS Grampian. The post-holder will be joining a team of fourteen Cardiologists. It is expected that the Locum position may be followed by a substantive post, also to be advertised and interviewed separately, in due course.

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Cardiology, at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen. NHS Grampian serves a population of 620,000, including patients from NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland.  The Department is part of the Acute Services Directorate, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, NHS Grampian. Hospitals within NHS Grampian comprise Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Woodend Hospital and Roxburghe House.

The Cardiology Department provides Elective and Acute Coronary Intervention including a 24 hour primary PCI service (around 1000 PCIs performed annually), Brady and complex pacing device insertion, as well as an invasive Electrophysiology service in our two dedicated state of the art Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories. In advance of plans for a third Catheter Lab, there will be a mobile Catheter Lab on site to support the increased demand. The new appointee must be proficient in Diagnostic Angiography as well as Acute and Elective and Coronary Intervention (including use of Intra-Coronary Physiology and imaging assessments) and must demonstrate commitment to the primary PCI rota.

There is a busy Echocardiography department, performing Transthoracic, Transoesphageal, Contrast and Bubble Echo, 3D Echo and stress Echocardiography. The department has recently replaced 12 Echocardiography platforms with new state of the art GE and Philips systems in addition to the already existent two Epiq systems to support the advanced Echo and TAVI services.  All advanced Cardiac imaging modalities are readily available on the Foresterhill site, including Coronary CT, Cardiac MRI, PET, Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy, and DPD scanning for Cardiac Amyloid.

The in–patient Cardiac department consists of a 10 bedded Coronary Care Unit and a 42 bedded in-patient Cardiology ward provision across 2 wards for acute admissions and step down provision. Coronary Care and Cardiology admitting wards are all within the new Emergency Care Centre. The step down provision is adjacent to a 16 bedded Day Case ward, Cardiac Catheterisation and Imaging Labs.

There will be ample opportunity to maintain and develop subspecialist skills, depending on the particular interest and skills of the applicant.
