Who We Are
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.

The core function of the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) Directorate is to support the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, health and social care chaplains and their support workers.  The Directorate is also responsible for providing education, training and workforce development across wider professional groups and disciplines, often in partnership with other agencies, to support key policy imperatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NMAHP Directorate and the Women, Children, Young People and Families programme to lead on already established work in maternity services to contribute to the implementation of the NES/Scottish Government (2017) Transforming Psychological Trauma: Knowledge and Skills for the Scottish Workforce.  We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Midwife to deliver educational initiatives focussed on supporting implementation of the framework.

What you'll do
Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;

  • In partnership with key stakeholders, review identified gaps in educational resources related to trauma informed practice for midwives and those who provide broader maternity services.
  • Lead an engagement plan to ensure the voices of people with lived experience are central to developments.
  • In partnership with NES Psychology, respond to report recommendations and provide leadership on stakeholder engagement activities which support educational activities. This will include identifying opportunities to increase the knowledge and skills of midwives at enhanced level.
  •  Work in partnership with key stakeholders, for example, Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland, to integrate a trauma informed approach to sexual trauma and abuse throughout the maternity care journey.
  •  Recommendations and planning for future requirements for ongoing sustainability

What you'll bring
The successful applicant will be an innovative and highly motivated midwife (qualified to Masters level or equivalent) and have significant experience in clinical practice.  The post provides an opportunity to take a leading role in an established programme of work at national level, to ensure women using maternity services in Scotland receive a trauma informed approach throughout their maternity journey, that identifies their needs and mitigates potential adverse impact of trauma on pregnancy and birth. Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills are essential, as is engagement through partnership working with a range of stakeholders. In addition, the post-holder will be able to demonstrate flexibility and high-level diplomacy skills.

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Proven experience in developing, commissioning, managing and evaluating development programmes/activities.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of a range of training programme elements and developing learning materials.
  • Significant experience of managing large and complex projects/programmes
  • Experience/understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies.
  • Ability, experience and judgement to work independently and as part of a senior team.
  • Ability to build highly effective relations internally and externally is key as well as excellent facilitation, presentation and strategic thinking and analysis skills.

The base for the post is negotiable and whilst we are currently working remotely, travel throughout Scotland may be required at some stage during the post. Informal enquiries may be directed to Clare McGuire, Head of Programme clare.mcguire@nhs.scot
