Job Advert

This is an exciting and challenging time for Public Health and Intelligence (PHI) and Health Protection Scotland (HPS) as we move to become a part of a new Public Health Body for Scotland, to be known as Public Health Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to work, not only in national Health Protection but also to work in partnership to deliver Public Health services which enable and support a safer and healthier Scotland.  This will involve working with NHS Scotland, the Scottish Government Health Directorates, NHS Education Scotland, NHS Health Scotland, healthcare providers, academia and others.

We are currently seeking three full time (37.5 hours per week) and one part time (18.75 hours per week) Healthcare Scientist Advanced (Epidemiology) Band 7 posts in the multidisciplinary Blood Borne Viruses, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Immunisation and Respiratory Group within Health Protection Scotland based in Glasgow. The post holders will work in selected areas across the teams, for example, on vaccine preventable diseases, HIV or TB.

You will support a full range of public health activities including implementation and evaluation of national surveillance programmes. This will include collecting, managing, analysing and reporting surveillance data from routine and non routine sources. Responsibilities will also include operational support and advice, research, education and training, and involve collaboration with a number of internal and external stakeholder groups. You will also be able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and on your own initiative and lead on projects or topic areas as required.

You will have an enthusiastic approach and good organisational skills; a primary degree in a scientific or clinical subject, and a postgraduate degree in epidemiology, public health or a relevant healthcare related field and/or demonstrable experience in epidemiological research methods including the use of statistical packages (e.g. EpiInfo, R, SPSS or STATA) and a record of peer-reviewed publications.

You will be able to work to a high standard using judgement and initiative to handle day-to-day issues, while balancing your time and workload to meet deadlines. You will have a proven, successful track record in epidemiology and the ability to analyse and interpret data and to communicate your ideas in a clear and concise manner is essential. You must be results–orientated and be able to achieve these working in partnership, in a team environment. It is vital that you demonstrate the values of NSS with openness, integrity, respect and care being at their heart.

Our benefits package includes pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits.

For an informal discussion on the post, please contact Dr Heather Murdoch heather.murdoch@nhs.net  on 0141 300 1159.
