Location: This Specialist Research Lead post will be within the Dental Directorate’s Clinical Effectiveness Workstream, which is based in Dundee Dental Education Centre (DDEC). The successful postholder’s base of work may be DDEC or an alternative site. NES is a remote friendly employer supporting office, remote and hybrid working.


Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations.


Working within NES’s Dental Directorate, the Clinical Effectiveness Workstream generates and synthesizes research evidence, makes national guidance recommendations and supports their implementation. It also contributes to the development and implementation of specific Scottish Government quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. In this way the Clinical Effectiveness Workstream supports healthcare professionals to adopt and apply up-to-date knowledge and skills, facilitates the delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based patient care and advances quality improvement.


What You Will Do

You will join an innovative and enthusiastic team within the Dental Clinical Effectiveness Workstream. The team has gained an international reputation for developing and publishing Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) clinical guidance that is widely used by dental and other healthcare professionals throughout Scotland and in other countries. You will also participate in other research and evaluation activities within the workstream related to SDCEP guidance implementation.


Your key tasks will include, but are not restricted to:

  • Managing guidance development projects
  • Literature searching, critical appraisal and evidence synthesis and summarising
  • Drafting and developmental editing of clinical guidance, associated implementation tools and other reports and products for a range of intended audiences
  • Working with a range of stakeholders to understand diverse contexts and to inform decision making
  • Contributing to the development of methodologies within the workstream to streamline and enhance working practices
  • Collaborating with colleagues in designing, conducting and reporting research activities


About You

  • You will bring experience and understanding of research methodologies and critical appraisal.
  • You will have experience of managing projects, be able to prioritise workload, establish goals, timescales and work plans and meet agreed targets.
  • You will be a skilled presenter, with the ability to communicate complex, highly specialized information, with excellent IT, information management, analytical and numerical skills.  
  • With a keen eye for detail and quality, you will have experience in drafting and producing papers and reports for publication.
  • Able to work within a team, you will have leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and a flexible approach to learning and problem solving.
