Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations. 


NES Optometry primarily supports the provision of General Ophthalmic Services in Scotland.  It supports up-skilling of eyecare practitioners, to facilitate delivery of safe, effective eyecare to the population of Scotland.

What you'll do

This post will support the education requirements of the Scottish Government’s manifesto commitment on emulating the Welsh low vision service. 

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;

  • Within the first three months of the role the postholder must compile a report for Scottish Government outlining options and costings for development and subsequent delivery of a low vision accreditation.
  • Provision of professional advice and consultancy on a range of educational issues/training programmes including the Low Vision post graduate training.
  • A focus of the post is role development of the optometric workforce around Low Vision
  • Provision of professional leadership to the workstream and ensure that the project plan is fully integrated with Scottish Government Eyecare team, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Contributes to setting of budgets around options for Low Vision delivery and monitoring these thereafter, reporting quarterly to Scottish Government.


What you'll bring

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Educated to Masters degree level or equivalent
  • Substantial postgraduate experience and will have held enhanced responsibility in an educational or healthcare post
  • Experience of working in an educationally or knowledge management focused environment
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Experience of budget monitoring, financial forecasting and control
  • Experience of planning and delivering education and training
  • Experience in deploying improvement methodologies to develop services
  • Experience /understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies
  • Experience in writing complex reports for a diverse audience including instances whereby interpretation of related policies is required
