Are you looking for a change of lifestyle surrounded by beautiful landscapes, with a wide variety of outdoor and social opportunities, as well as a rewarding job. Do you want to make a difference to the life of individuals requiring your help with medicines they use? And be part of the team providing care within the Gilbert Bain hospital featured in the TV series Island Medics?

The role

NHS Shetland is looking for a clinical pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care within our 60 bed hospital in Lerwick. The hospital provides acute care for island residents and off-shore emergencies covering all disciplines, as well as outpatient care delivered by local and visiting specialists.

Applicants will be enthusiastic and dynamic, be looking for an opportunity to deliver person-facing care and be ready to take on the challenge of being part of the clinical team who respond to the wide variety of conditions which present. You will work here during an exciting time of change as we implement electronic prescribing and medicines administration as part of the North of Scotland regional project for HEPMA.

While the core role is based in the hospital you will be part of the wider pharmacy team which includes primary care pharmacists and technicians, who will work with you to enable you to be involved with the patients care throughout their entire care journey. Close links with other members of the Health & Social Care Partnership team ensure that a joined up approach is possible to meet each person’s needs.

This contract is for a fixed-term for 8 months. The reason for the fixed-term contract is for maternity leave.  If you wish to apply for this post as a secondment opportunity, you will need to discuss with your line manager before submitting an application.

The location

The Shetland Islands are home to 23,000 people, an abundance of amazing wildlife, breath-taking natural beauty and a thriving, forward-looking and welcoming community.

Shetland has a rich cultural heritage while also being home to dynamic creative industries and a buoyant local economy.

Among the stunning coastal landscapes, you will find bustling communities served by exceptional facilities including highly regarded schools, eight well-equipped leisure centres and a state-of-the-art cinema and arts venue.

The hospital is based in the main town of Lerwick which has a population of around 7,500 residents but around half of the islands’ 23,000 people live within 10 miles of the town. Lerwick has grown up around its busy harbour with the original waterfront buildings dating from the 18th century. The modern deep water port is the base for a thriving fishing industry, and the town plays host to many visitors from cruise ships during the summer months.

Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity - Shetland is a wonderful place to live and work,  while only a short flight away from the UK mainland.  To find out more about living and working in Shetland go to www.shetland.org and/or https://www.shetland.org/life
