Job Advert

Have you been in the rat race too long and need a change, or are you recently retired but would still like to do some part-time work? Do you want to be part of a small tightly knit community with lots of opportunities to take part in any of a large number of activities such as music, drama, photography and many more? Does archaeology, stone circles, brochs or Neolithic villages tickle your fancy? Do you like to sail, dive or do any other sport? Are you a foodie? Does quality care lie close to your heart? Want to work full time, part time, annualised hours, flexibly? The choice is yours. If so, think of a career move to Orkney!

Not only is Orkney home to some of Scotland’s most attractive islands, but it has also been chosen as the best place to live in the UK. All this and a brand new hospital, opened in June 2019.

NHS Orkney is working hard to be the best remote and rural health care provider in the UK – do you want to help us achieve our ambition? If so and you are a Physician we would welcome hearing from you.

Like the other NHS Boards in Scotland, NHS Orkney is required to provide routine and urgent care for patients from the new-born to the very old. We provide in- and outpatient care to elective patients. We also manage all emergencies and are able to triage, treat and stabilise and, if needed, use the emergency retrieval services to transport patients to a more appropriate care setting on the mainland.

NHS Orkney is looking for Consultants to join its existing talented pool of consultants as we transform the healthcare landscape of this stunning archipelago.   Our new hospital and healthcare facility with state of the art diagnostics opened in June 2019.  This new facility has 49 inpatient beds with purpose-built emergency, high dependency, diagnostic, maternity, palliative care and theatre facilities. GPs, dentists and the ambulance service are all on the same site, opening possibilities of even more cooperative working. There is state of the art technical connectivity to support videoconferencing and telemedicine enabled care.

This post requires a special type of Consultant - a generalist, who is also happy to manage the full spectrum of patients presenting for care. You will also utilise digital technologies to involve clinical colleagues from outwith the organisation to inform and support decision making when required. Can you see yourself in one of these new roles?  These posts require a broad spectrum of clinical skills which for many are greater than those covered by specialty training.  To help, we have agreed with the Post Graduate Deanery to offer a bespoke training programme to assist consultants to gain the skills required to fulfil these roles competently.  Opportunities to spend time working in NHS Grampian and/or NHS Highland together with access to an attractive CPD package will help you maintain your skills.

In return, you can expect a person-specific contract to meet both your own and NHS Orkney’s needs.  This contract can be full time or part time, annualised full or part time, and shared with another NHS organisation on the mainland. Opportunities are available for those at any stage in their consultant career including recent retirees and support will be provided around travel and accommodation. NHS Orkney is willing to work with you to provide a form of contract which meets your own and our patient’s needs. We have a pragmatic approach to the use of any particular skills that applicants may bring to the benefit of people in Orkney.

Our ability to offer flexibility makes NHS Orkney an attractive employer.  We can and will work with you to meet your needs. But don’t take our word for it – we recommend that you come and see for yourself the many opportunities for clinicians working in a remote and rural context. We will support your visit to the island where you will find a very warm welcome and would be happy to discuss the practicalities of this with you.
