Consultant Psychiatrist (10 PAs) (Ref: 82961)

Shetland is a group of 15 inhabited islands. Although part of north Scotland, the culture and dialect have clear Scandinavian roots. Nature in Shetland is still truly wild and unspoilt, with otters, seals and orca’s regularly observed even in the waters around Lerwick and large colonies of breeding sea birds all around the islands in summer. Winters are lit up by the annual Viking fire festivals and wool week. Life has a pleasant pace, with good internet, air and ferry connections to the rest of the world.
The population is 23,000 of mostly local and Scottish origin with a satisfying variety of mental health issues. Due to its remote island position and small population, working relationships with primary and secondary care are close (700 staff) and the organisational structure flat, pragmatic and with little bureaucracy. With access to emergency beds on the medical ward, inpatient psychiatric care is provided at the Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen, as are some of the specialist services.
The team of which you will be part consists of a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, a Clinical Nurse Manager and Community Psychiatric Nurses (including a Liaison Psychiarty Nurse). We also have a Substance Misuse Recovery team, with a GP with Special Interest in Dual Diagnosis; a small dementia and BPSD team, CAMHS and an LD and autism nurse.
The post holder ideally is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist with interest in substance Misuse. Because of the remoteness of the service, clinical experience and good team working are essential. Training in the Scottish Mental Health Act is required, but can be arranged once in post. Post graduate training, appraisal and GMC revalidation will be facilitated.
