Job Advert

NHS Grampian is looking for qualified and enthusiastic applicants for the post of Specialty Doctor in our tertiary Neonatal Unit (NNU). The post is a fixed term post and would suit Doctors with a minimum of six months of Neonatal experience.

The successful applicant will work at Junior or Middle Grade level depending on experience and contributing to the out-of-hours rota. The posts are composed of 10 PAs potentially with scope for additional EPAs.  The post holders will be based in the tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, which provides Neonatal services for the North East of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Isles.

The Unit also provides the Regional Neonatal Surgical Service for the North East of Scotland and the Highlands. The team in Aberdeen is responsible for providing a Regional Transport Service for the North and North East of Scotland, and the Orkney and Shetland Islands.  This responsibility is shared with colleagues in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Aberdeen Maternity Hospital is fully accredited by the North of Scotland Deanery as a centre for subspecialty training in Neonatal Medicine. The Foetal Maternal Medicine programme also has close links with the department. The unit is the tertiary referral centre for the North of Scotland and leads the Scottish Northern regional network. The unit is one of the largest in Scotland and has 38 Neonatal cots, consisting of 17 ITU/HDU cots and 21 special care cots. There are approximately 6000 deliveries per annum in North of Scotland area with 4500 deliveries in Aberdeen Maternity hospital itself. The NNU has approximately 900 admissions per annum.

The department is staffed by 10 Consultant Neonatologists, 1 Associate Specialist, 8 Paediatric Trainees, 6 Specialty Doctors and 4 Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs). The unit has close links with the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and runs a follow up programme. The Neonatal Transport Service for the North of Scotland has approximately 400 transports per year.  Professional competence in the clinical care of the critically ill newborn and understanding of the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the foetus and neonate is acquired via training in clinical management, research, and teaching.

It is expected that the Specialty Doctors may supervise Junior Doctors and Nurse Practitioners during their clinical rotations. Speciality doctors are encouraged to develop their own audit and research projects under the guidance of their clinical supervisors and will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research.
