Job Advert

An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly dynamic team consisting of two Consultant Histopathologists and a Specialty Doctor.  The team is supported by an Advanced Practitioner, a BMS dissection team and Laboratory Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Support Worker staff.  The successful candidate will have a chance to develop a specialist interest in an area of the Histopathology service with support from the wider regional teams.

This post is based in the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, a district general hospital with a major reputation for delivering quality care as well as being at the forefront of innovative practice.  The range of services provided by the hospital is, by virtue of its geographical location, considerably more wide and complex than many much larger traditional district general hospitals.

The Department provides a wide range of clinical diagnostic and advisory services supported by scientific facilities in three inter-related disciplines:

•    Histopathology (approximately 11000 requests per year)
•    Diagnostic Cytopathology (500 -1000 requests per year)
•    Mortuary and Autopsy services (150 autopsies per year)

In addition to routine diagnostic services expected for a district general hospital, Dumfries & Galloway is accredited as a Cancer Unit for the diagnosis and management of common cancers including Skin, Head & Neck, Breast, Colorectal & upper Gastrointestinal, Respiratory, Urological, Haematological, Gynaecological malignancies.

Applicants must hold FRCPath in Histopathology and have completed a period of training in Pathology that is recognised by the Royal College of Pathologists. They should be on, or eligible for, inclusion on the specialist register within six months of appointment.

The region offers beautiful countryside, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to forests, hills and rolling plains. There is a wide range of activities on offer, with water sports, hiking, fishing, bird watching, golf, mountain-biking or cycling along the network of rural roads and much more. There are also lots of family friendly attractions- farm parks, soft plays etc. House prices are low in comparison to other areas of the UK (some recently appointed consultant have now swapped 3 bedroom houses for farms with many acres of land), schools are good and you are within 1.5 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lake District and Newcastle to enjoy the variety of city and country life.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway offer a full relocation package.

Applications from candidates looking to work less than full time are also welcome.  There is flexibility around individual’s requirements and the requirements of family and partners.
