An opportunity has arisen within the IT SBU for an Information Governance Advisor within the Technology Office.

The role of the IT SBU is to support the NHS Scotland National eHealth Agenda through the effective delivery of IM&T products and specialist services that will enable clinical process and efficiency improvement across Scotland.

This role will be to support in the disciplines of Information Governance, Information Risk Management and Data Protection.  They will have responsibility in assisting the Senior Consultant Information Governance in aspects of implementation and management of the National Information Governance (IG) Agenda relating to internal IT projects and BAU systems as well as National IT projects and Live National applications.  This role will be responsible for ensuring that NSS Information Governance policies and processes meet and exceed National requirements and minimise the exposure to risk for the NHS and other relevant public bodies.  This includes ensuring that staff within the organisations supported are aware of their own responsibilities and are adequately trained and briefed.  The areas where the post holder will be a subject matter expert are:
-    Information Governance
-    Data Protection
-    Caldicott Standards
-    Confidentiality Codes of Conduct/Practice
-    Data/Information Quality Assurance

The Key functions for this role are:

  •     Act as an additional point of contact for information governance (IG) issues relating to national systems for all NSS IT SBU staff, this includes liaising with the NSS Senior Consultant Information Governance
  •    Helping to ensure that all national systems for which NSS IT SBU has “responsibility” comply with appropriate information governance standards.  
  •   Support in the provision of IG advice for various IT projects being undertaken across NSS.
  •   Ensuring IG requirements are integrated into the project and service management processes at all the relevant points throughout the lifecycle of IT projects and the subsequent “business as usual” phase.
  •   Advise on the completion of Data Protection Impact Assessments for new IT projects and significant changes in BAU IT systems.   Deputise for and support the Senior Consultant Information Governance in the provision of IG expertise into the resolution of a variety of problems within BAU systems.
  •   Become a subject expert in relation to Data Protection Legislation, supporting the implementation programme across NSS IT and providing support and advice to NHS Boards and public bodies in relation to National IT applications.
  •    Work collaboratively with other IG Advisors both within NSS and across NHS Scotland.
  •   On occasion, contribute to presentations or National groups where the understandings of the Information Governance implications are essential to ensure agreement and co-operation within and across organisations.


You should have a good understanding of the IT landscape across Health and understand the vision for Health and Social Care integration across Scotland in moving to the 2020 vision.

It is crucial that the individuals have robust influencing and communication skills and have a strong customer focused approach.  The post holder will on occasion, be expected to work closely with internal and external stakeholders such as, eHealth leads in NHS Health Boards, senior clinician’s etc.
Although this post will primarily focus on specific remits within the team, it is worth noting that these are generic posts and the postholder must be willing, adaptable, and agile and have a strong ethos around team culture, customer engagement and enhancing the customer experience.
