Job Advert

This is an excellent opportunity to experience working in the Highlands with a great team. Due to a recent vacancy and expansion, NHS Highland wishes to appoint a Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine to maintain the quality of the Service and the consultant rota. The post is offered on a full time basis of 10 Programmed Activities per week until February 2021 initially.

Including this post there will be 5 full time and 2 part time consultants, with all 7 consultants playing equal parts in the on-call (i.e. 1:7). A business case is being put together for further consultant expansion to meet increasing demand on the service and to meet RCEM sustainable staffing recommendations.

This post is based in Raigmore Hospital, which is the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands providing Accident and Emergency services and Out of Hours Primary Care Emergency Centre (OOH PCEC) to Inverness and the surrounding catchment area of around 120,000 people. The hospital is also the secondary receiving service and regional Trauma Unit for the Highland area covering over 10,000 square miles. We have a diverse and stimulating case mix across all age ranges and presentations and due to the local geography we have minimal bypass of patients to other departments.

We have a modern 1000 sq metre, Emergency Department with a 4-bedded resuscitation area with overhead gantry X-ray, 11 treatment and examination rooms, and a dedicated paediatric waiting area/treatment rooms, a dedicated seminar room and staff room. There is 24/7 access to CT. We have good friendly working relationships with other services across Highland and beyond.

The primary care ‘out-of-hours’ service is co-located with some integration of provision of medical care.

The department is a designated major accident and radiation incident centre and has dedicated decontamination facilities. Further information on NHS Highland and its facilities can be found at www.nhshighland.scot.nhs.uk

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Andrew Rowlands, Service Lead for the Emergency Department, or Dr Michael Rennie, Consultant Emergency Medicine on 01463 704358 or amanda.hume2@nhs.net.
