Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.

The core function of the NMAHP Directorate is to support the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, health and social care chaplains and their support workers. 

The Directorate is also responsible for providing education, training and workforce development across wider professional groups and disciplines, often in partnership with other agencies, to support key policy imperatives such as public health, health protection, Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI), dementia and health and social care integration.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the NHAMP directorate in relation to a programme of work being led by NHS National  Serviecs Scotland relating to the healthcare-built environment. The vision of the proposed national centre is ‘To be an internationally recognised national centre for reducing risks in the healthcare built environment and ensuring they are safe, fit for purpose, cost effective and capable of delivering sustainable services over the long term.’ NHS Education for Scotland has been asked to support this work by progressing a cohesive and integrated approach to specialist workforce education development for this diverse multi-agency and multi professional staff group including clinical and estates and facilities staff.

This leadership role will include understanding needs across the system, developing training frameworks and educational resources as required for this clinical and non-clinical workforce.

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated educationalist with a keen  interest and/or significant experience in this area to lead this initiative.

What you'll do 

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;

  • Working in close partnership with stakeholders (including National Services Scotland – Health Facilities Scotland) to provide leadership in the co-production and implementation of a workforce education  strategy for the national centre and a national learning and development framework to support the centre in  fulfilling its vision.
  • Collating, interpreting and reconciling information and opinions from a range of stakeholders, especially where these may be conflicting, and analysing these to enable a compromise to be brokered or judgement made between the options
  • Identify priority workforce education requirements and progress as required, including review and scoping of gaps in current provision 
  • Lead/oversee  the development of quality assured educational resources and source/identify associated development/learning opportunities
  • Provide high level reports for internal and external oversight groups as required including the delivery of agree project milestones
  • Manage and provide  leadership to a small team, linking with relevant colleagues
  • Provide support  to the Head of Programme as directed including working across workstreams as necessary

What you'll bring

The post provides an opportunity to take a leading role in a programme of work at national level to support the reduction of infection and risk in the healthcare built environment.The successful applicant will be an innovative and highly motivated educationalist (qualified to Masters level or equivalent) preferably with experience in this area. Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills are essential, as is engagement through partnership working with a range of clinical and non clinical stakeholders. In addition, the post-holder will be able to demonstrate flexibility and high-level diplomacy skills.

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Proven experience in developing, commissioning, managing and evaluating development programmes/activities.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of a range of training/workforce education  programme elements and developing learning materials.
  • Significant experience of managing large and complex projects/programmes.
  • Experience/understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies.
  • Ability, experience and judgement to work independently and as part of a senior team.
  • Ability to build highly effective relations internally and externally is key as well as excellent facilitation, presentation and strategic thinking and analysis skills.
