Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.

The core function of the NMAHP Directorate is to support the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, health and social care chaplains and their support workers.  The Directorate is also responsible for providing education, training and workforce development across wider professional groups and disciplines, often in partnership with other agencies, to support key policy imperatives.

This is an exiciting opportunity to join the NMAHP Directorate within NHS Education for Scotland but also to work across the organisation. The purpose of this role is to provide professional leadership to key organisation and Directorate development activities aligned to Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities national priorities, and the delivery of strategic outcomes linked to key policy drivers and health and social care integration.


What you'll do 

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic leader, to join our senior clinical education team.

The post holder will lead on a portfolio of work, primarily providing strategic leadership and future-focused direction for Dementia and Mental Health and Learning Disabilities across the lifespan

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to;

  •   Join up and embed Mental Health and Learning Disability across work-streams in the directorate and across the organisation to deliver operational planning
  • Ensure that key outcomes relating to the Programme for Government, for Social Care Reform and the Adult Social Care Review are achieved, including dementia, trauma informed practice, reducing inequalities and suicide prevention.
  • Build on existing networks across Scottish Government and organisations to influence policy and strategy,  and develop collaborative educational and learning solutions.
  • Work with education and clinical partners to support high quality pre & post registration programmes to prepare a workforce that is progressive and responsive to the transformation of health and social care services.
  • Work in partnership across health, social care and wider public sector organisations to drive workforce development in the areas of dementia, mental health and learning disability education.  

What you'll bring

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Educated to Masters degree or evidence of equivalent learning, and appropriate professional registration.
  • Substantial experience in mental health, learning disabilities or dementia and education.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, organisational, management and leadership skills are essential, along with an strong understanding of policy, practice, education and professional structures and processes, including regulatory and other professional standards.
  • Ability to work at a strategic level across the directorate and organisation as well as with external partners such as Scottish Government, clinical and education partners, and other national bodies including the social care and wider public sector.
  • Ability to analyse information, understand complex arguments, make judgements and reconcile competing demands.


The base for the post may be negotiable but it is important to note travel throughout Scotland will be required and working remotely.
