Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.

The core function of the NMAHP Directorate is to support the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, health and social care chaplains and their support workers.  The Directorate is also responsible for providing education, training and workforce development across wider professional groups and disciplines, often in partnership with other agencies, to support key policy imperatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NMAHP Directorate within NHS Education for Scotland. The purpose of this role is to support midwifery workforce and education development and provide leadership for the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme (SMMDP). We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Midwife and educator who will be responsible for developing and delivering a range of educational initiatives focussed on supporting workforce education and development in response to national priorities.


What you'll do 

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to:

  • Working strategically in partnership with key stakeholders (internal and external) to develop, deliver and support a portfolio of midwifery education and workforce development activities.
  • Supporting multi-professional approaches to learning and workforce development across maternity and neonatal care, including health care support workers.
  • Work with education and clinical partners to support high quality pre & post registration programmes to prepare a workforce that is progressive and responsive to the transformation of services.
  • Build highly effective relations internally and externally as well as excellent facilitation, presentation, strategic thinking and analysis skills.
  • Build on existing networks across Scotland to influence policy development and implementation and develop collaborative educational and learning solutions to support them.


What you'll bring

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Educated to Masters degree level plus substantial postgraduate experience, or working towards this
  • Knowledge and experience in facilitating clinical skills and simulation in maternity and neonatal care.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of contemporary issues in midwifery.
  • Demonstrable senior management experience within a large complex organisation
  • Experience in leading and managing new and existing educational developments
  • Experience/understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies
  • Knowledge and expertise in education, leadership, management and models for delivery of development
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, negotiating, influencing and facilitation skills at a senior level
