Flexible Base:  NES is a remote friendly employer supporting office, remote and hybrid working.  Contractual base location will be agreed at appointment.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, strategic thinker within Spiritual Care to make a major contribution to the advancement of spiritual care policy, education and service development across Scotland.

Based in NES, the post holder will work with a wide range of stakeholders and will be expected to provide professional leadership around the development of Spiritual Care within NHS Scotland and partners.

The postholder will be expected to:

  • create and maintain effective links with faith communities including different denominations of the Christian church and the many world faith communities and belief groups throughout Scotland including the Scottish Humanist Association.
  • establish good relationships with others providing spiritual care modules, especially in nurse education in Higher Education Institutions in order to ensure consistent approaches.
  • develop and encourage programmes of spiritual care education and training for chaplains and others to deliver to clinical and non-clinical staff in NHS Scotland.
  • support the development and monitoring of standards, capabilities and competencies and appropriate professionalism for spiritual care provision in partnership with and other relevant bodies.

In addition to NES responsibilities, the post holder has a specific advisory role to the Scottish Government and is expected to maintain a good proactive relationship with Scottish Government Health Directorates from whom advice and written guidance is requested and required.

The post holder must have the skills necessary to develop and utilise an extensive and complex professional network of contacts and relationships with government agencies, funding bodies, professional regulatory bodies, faith communities, belief groups, other education providers, other professions, NES colleagues and the NHS. The ability to analyse information, understand complex arguments, make judgements, reconcile competing demands, and negotiate with and influence others are key skills.

The post holder must be an excellent communicator and will have demonstrated clear evidence of success in his/her career to date, including a commitment to continuous professional development.
