Who NHS Education for Scotland Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.


NES Digital Overview

NES Digital develop and lead a programme of work and services that support the corporate functions that allow NES to work and deliver its strategic objectives. Digital has been formed with the specific objective of consolidating NES’ information-based expertise into a professional, focused centre for information and technical excellence. It has created a strategic programme for the transformation of digital based services to allow NES to become a leading digital organisation in Scottish Health, digital by default and fully aligned with the Scottish Government’s eHealth and Digital strategies. This has been delivered by our Turas platform, whose product details can easily be found online.

During the pandemic NES Digital’s technology has been ideally placed to deliver, at speed and at scale, further products that now sit inside Turas. These include:

  • Turas Vaccination Management - allowing Scotland's health and social care staff to record patient vaccination data at the point of care.
  • Turas Clinical Assessment - allowing COVID-19 clinical assessment data to be collected at the point of care, in real time to improve situational awareness, decision making, safety and handover.


The Role

NES Digital’s position as a technical leader within the delivery of the Scottish Government’s eHealth and Digital strategies is now recognized nationally and internationally. Consequentially, a General Manger to lead our Business Operations team to ensure the anticipated further rapid expansion of our service is expertly managed is now sought. This new and highly visible Fixed Term post requires someone with the skills and experience to manage within a high pressure, delivery focused environment.

Details of the key tasks associated with this position can be found in the associated paperwork, but in summary the postholder will be expected to lead on work in our directorate in the following areas: Operational Planning, Financial forecasting & reporting and Service design and delivery. Whilst this is a senior non technical management role, the postholder will be expected an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of our product roadmaps, using that to forecast and plan operational support with accuracy.


What you'll bring

Details for the skills we are looking for can be found in the associated paperwork. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) with a further Master’s degree in management (or equivalent experience) you will, in summary, be able to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience of both business management and operational management within a large complex organisation.
  • Experience and/or understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies.
  • Experience in deploying improvement methodologies to develop services
  • In depth knowledge of legal frameworks governing: Health and Safety, Employment Law, Freedom of Information, Data Protection etc.
  • Those with transferrable skills from other industries are welcome.
