The role:
Dietitians are health professionals, whose key role is to translate the science of nutrition into relevant and practical information, based on clinical evidence. The role of Community Dietitians comprises of 3 broad functions: clinical treatment, health improvement and support and training of others to ensure consistent up-to-date nutrition messages. The following principles guide their work: build on existing knowledge and skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which incorporates evidence based practice, liaise and involve the community at all stages; facilitate and empower the individuals in the change process.

Key responsibilities:
Clinical:
Therapeutic Intervention
• Manage a community caseload delivering dietetic care via face-to-face and virtual appointments.
• Provide dietetic assessment, treatment, review, and monitoring of nutritional care plans.
• Deliver health improvement interventions aligned to local needs.
• Advise on prescribable nutritional products and use pharmacy nutrition support services.
• Communicate complex information sensitively and build effective therapeutic relationships.
• Liaise with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, coordinated care.
• Maintain professional accountability, accurate records, and activity data.
Health Improvement Activity
• Support and deliver local nutrition health improvement activities across the life course.
• Contribute to national and local health improvement priorities.
• Collate activity and provide evidence-based nutrition resources.
• Prioritise health improvement work under supervision.
Professional
• Obtain valid consent and recognise capacity issues.
• Maintain accurate documentation and data in line with standards.
• Escalate service delivery concerns appropriately.
• Comply with health and safety, ethical, and legal requirements.
• Maintain HCPC registration and professional competence.
Professional Responsibilities
• Deliver care in accordance with service policies and HCPC standards.
• Participate in audit, clinical effectiveness, reflective practice, and CPD.
• Support service development and implementation of best practice.
Training and Education
• Support, mentor, and supervise students and support staff.
• Contribute to education and training for health professionals and community groups.
• Share current dietetic practice and participate in relevant audit activity.
Organisational / Human Resources
• Manage workload effectively within service priorities.
• Use resources efficiently and support administrative processes.
• Communicate across teams, attend meetings, and provide reports.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety policies.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Qualifications
- BSc Human Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
- Registered Dietitian with Health & Care Professional Council
- Full Driving Licence
Training
- Record of CPD
Knowledge & Skills
- Broad clinical knowledge across a range of conditions, including diabetes, nutrition support, enteral feeding etc
