Deputy Manager - UK Medical & Dental Recruitment and Selection (MDRS)  

Hours: Full Time, 37.5 hours per week

Who We Are  

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations. 

The Medical Directorate is responsible to the NES Board and through the Board to Scottish Government for the commissioning and delivery of postgraduate medical education in Scotland. The role of the Directorate is to recruit, oversee training, manage the trainee’s progress through the training programme and ensure the training is delivered to GMC standards.  

Within the Scottish Medical Recruitment Team, this role will support the recruitment manager, having an overview of all current Medical, Dental and Pharmacy recruitment processes managed by the team, together with the planning and delegation of work related to each workstream. They will also lead on key pieces of work such as management of Pharmacy and Dental recruitment processes and as the Oriel (UK recruitment portal) expert for Scotland, will undertake coordinated system testing across all workstreams. The Deputy Manager will take an educator role through the development of online Oriel training and support materials for users across all Directorates. In addition, the Deputy Manager will represent Scotland in discussions regarding Oriel system developments to improve the recruitment process for all workstreams.  

What you'll do 

Key tasks will include but are not restricted to; 

  • Ensure all processes and procedures are followed as set out by UK Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection (MDRS) process, and key stakeholders within set deadlines.  

  • Oversee all recruitment processes and functions of the team and planning and distribution of team workload 

  • Become Scotland’s expert user for Oriel (the UK recruitment portal) and take part in discussions on system developments and testing as required 

  • Responsible for online training materials on Oriel for Scotland users 

  • Responsible the timetabling, management and delivery of all main recruitment processes on Oriel for medical, dental and pharmacy staff groups 

  • Manage the delivery of dental vocational training and pharmacy recruitment on bespoke NES systems  

  • Line Management of admin support 

  • Develop, implement and manage process improvement within the team.  

  • Communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders at various levels both internal and external to NES 

  • The postholder may be required to attend committees and meetings to contribute to the development of the recruitment process across the UK, as well as deputising for their line manager as required.  

  • Some travel across Scotland and the UK may be required. 

What you'll bring  

These will include but are not restricted to: 

  • Either a background in project management or an interest in developing project management skills  

  • You must be able to prioritise and manage your own workload effectively and be able to undertake a wide range of activities concurrently, in addition to meeting competing demands, adjusting as required. 

  • You must be able to act independently as appropriate within guidelines, using initiative and strong decision-making skills to assess situations to problem solve.  

  • You must have strong time management and organisational skills, and attention to detail. 

  • You must be able to analyse, interpret and effectively communicate complex information to inform appropriate judgements to be made, or to recommend a change in process or course of action. 

  • You must be able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.  

  • You must have previous line management experience and a desire to progress your management skills 

  • With a background in recruitment, you will have well-developed interpersonal skills and a high level of written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, presentation skills and the ability to deliver training.
