NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest health board in Scotland, responsible for delivering health services to a population of 1.3 million across six local authority areas. With an annual budget of £4.5 billion and over 40,000 staff, we provide a full range of secondary tertiary, primary, community, and mental health services.


The Role

We are seeking an exceptional leader as Chief Executive. Reporting directly to the Board Chair.  Our Chief Executive will be accountable for the strategic direction, and the finance, clinical and staff governance of the organisation. You will lead the development and implementation of health strategies that align with the Board’s aims: Better Health, Better Care, Better Value and Better Workplace.


As Chief Executive, you will lead the delivery of health outcomes within our communities, tackling health inequalities, and ensuring the effective use of resources. You will work closely with our six Health and Social Care Partnerships and other key stakeholders to continue our integration journey across health and social care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership to ensure the Board delivers its performance targets across all areas of responsibility.
  • Lead the development and delivery of local clinical strategies that improve health services and outcomes in line with health and social policy.
  • Maintain the propriety and regularity of financial transactions and ensure value for money in all operations as the Accountable Officer.


Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior leadership role within a large and complex public sector organisation, preferably within healthcare. You will have a proven track record of leading transformational change, strategic planning, and delivery of high performance in a high-profile and politically sensitive environment.


Key requirements include

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Executive-level leadership development or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience in financial management, performance management and developing culture.
  • An understanding of NHS Scotland policy and the current challenges facing the health and social care system in Scotland.
  • You will be a credible and politically astute leader with exceptional communication, negotiation, and influencing skills. Your leadership style will be inclusive and decisive, inspiring a culture of excellence and continuous improvement across the organisation.
